INTERNATIONAL MARITIME CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP ON “Non-State Actors Threat to Maritime Economy, Environment & Security”

Threat to Maritime economy and environment from non-state actors is becoming issue of serious concern amongst all state. Pakistan being a maritime nation is equally concerned amongst all states. Pakistan being a maritime nation is equally concerned with safety of maritime economy and environment which is its lifeline. National Center of Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR) of Bahria University, in collaboration with Pakistan Navy and British High Commission (Pakistan), organized two days international conference and workshop on Non State Actors threat to maritime economy, environment and security.


In continuum of the March Conference recommendations, it was identified that today and as well as in the foreseeable future, Pakistan’s maritime Economy, Environment and Security is prone to a constant threat from the non-state actors. Hence, to develop a path to a coordinated multi-agency response between threat to maritime economy, environment and security, which includes links to government agencies, the commercial sector and security organizations. The Maritime Conference and Policy Development Workshop was convened on 6 and 7 September 2007, at NCMPR, Bahria University Karachi Campus, Pakistan. First Sea Lord Sir Jonathan Band KCB, ADC from Royal Navy inaugurated the conference on 06 Sep 07. Eminent maritime scholar Professor Geoffrey Till of UK delivered lecture on the theme of the conference. The participants of the event included various stakeholders in maritime domain including related ministries and organizations of Government of Pakistan.

The conference closed on 7th Sep 2007. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir NI (M) was the chief guest on the closing session.
