National Centre for Maritime Policy Research National Centre for Maritime Policy Research, being a unique research centre in Pakistan, is poised to conduct world class maritime research for the upheavel of maritime sector in Pakistan. Since its inception in January 2007, NCMPR has organzied two International Maritime Conference in March 2007 and March 2008. It also conducted an International Maritime Workshop on Maritime Policy in September 2007. The centre has also made several International linkages with the leading maritime research organziations and educational institutions. The Centre has the ability to conduct maritime research from concept formulation to validation with its exceptional combination of expertise gained from its visiting and residential research fellows. PAKISTAN AS A MARITIME NATION Pakistan has a coastline of 990 kilometers and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 240,000 square kilometers with the provision of adding another 50,000 square kilometers under Article 76 of UN Conventions on Laws of Seas. The EEZ has the potential of enormous living and non living resources to supplement the economy of the nation. Geo-strategically Pakistan has a very important location and lies at the cross junction of Central Asia, Persian Gulf and East Asia and is confronted with multifaceted issues due to the volatile and unpredictable situation in the Indian Ocean region. Post Cold War and post 9/11 global politics have numerous implications and as a result novel maritime concerns have emerged for Pakistan. NCMPR is poised to address these concerns and endeavoring for the development of a policy framework focussed on the optimum utilization of the maritime resources of Pakistan |
